Oscar Hopes For Barfi!

Bollywood film Barfi! has been confirmed as India’s entry for the Oscars. The unusual story of a deaf and mute boy (Ranbir Kapoor) and the friendship he strikes up with two girls, one of whom is autistic (Priyanka Chopra), has been nominated for the Best Foreign Film Category and is hoping to become the fourth film in history to make the shortlist.
Since the prestigious Academy Awards began in 1957, only three films from India have made the cut; Mother India, Salaam Bombay and Lagaan.
Directed by Anurag Basu, best known for his realist drama Life In A Metro, starring Shilpa Shetty, Barfi! has taken over $10million at the box office since it opened a fortnight a go and is Ranbir’s biggest opening film to date.
The popularity of the movie has come as a surprise as it was expected to have niche appeal, because of the storyline. One expert said: ‘This film is not specifically for the masses. It is one of those films that are made for people with a passion for cinema.’
Director Anurag has described the film as a homage to silent film star Charlie Chaplain, since the lead character has no words, while the score, composed by Pritam is one of the most important aspects, bringing the tale together. The film is set in Darjeeling and has been praised throughout the industry for its stunning cinematography

The 85th Academy Awards will take place on February 24, 2013 and nominations will be announced on January 10.
