Freida Pinto has been appointed a brand ambassador for Plan International
Indian actress and model Freida Pinto has teamed up with an international charity to raise awareness about rights for young girls. Last month Freida visited Sierra Leone where she witnessed first hand the experiences of girls who are victims of poverty and don't have access to the education they should be entitled to.
As brand ambassador for Plan International's Because I'm A Girl campaign, Freida aims to raise awareness of social issues that affect girls in Africa including access to food, water, healthcare and education.
Speaking about her trip, Freida said: 'I witnessed first hand how girls can be empowered to help their communities. If given the right support we can educate girls to reach their fullest potential, pulling them and their families out of poverty.'
Over the world an estimated 75 million young girls are not in school, equal to the population of the entire UK.
The campaign is part of the first ever International Day Of The Girl which aims to reach out to four million of the world's poorest girls.
