Wheat free and wonderful
No wheat doesn’t mean no taste…

Anyone with a dietary restriction will tell you how hard it is when you’re offered snacks…most of the time you have to turn them down or worse still settle for the less tastier option. The trouble is intolerances are on the increase and wheat and gluten are amongst the most common – they are not the same thing. Wheat free products contain low levels of gluten such as cereals like rye and barley which some people can tolerate, where as gluten free contain no traced of wheat which if you are a Coeliac, is the only safe option. Coeliac is a not an allergy but a disease which is triggered by gluten, a protein found in cereals – trouble is these can crop up in the most unlikely of places – not just things you commonly think of like bread but in tomato ketchup and cooking sauces and sadly teatime treats like cakes and biscuits.

Step into the supermarket and you’ve probably noticed a ‘free from aisle’, if you don’t have an intolerance you probably never need to look at it but next time you do go out shopping stop for a moment and have a ponder at the food products on offer. They are suitable for everyone, taste good and most are healthier than typical snack options. Mrs Crimbles of one of the best-known brands for creating both wheat free and gluten free foods and surprisingly none of the products taste any different. From light cheesy crackers to moist and juice macaroons, their recipes have revolutionalised snacking for suffers of wheat and gluten intolerances. Prices start from £1 and they are available in all major supermarkets.
