Introducing the bhangra burger

By fashion_admin | Posted Fri 27 May 2011

It’s fast food but not as you know it. A combination of deliciously spiced burgers served in a healthy flatbread to a soundtrack of Asian grooves and fusion beats; Bhangra Burgers are the only dish you should be feasting on this festival season. The cult grub was born in the West Midlands where young curry fanatic Alec Owen began served up spicy burgers for friend’s bbqs. He recalls: ‘Growing up in Birmingham I witnessed the birth of the bhangra movement and was exposed to all aspects of British Asian culture where cuisine was central, so adding garam masala to my recipes was normal. My mates named my creations ‘bhangra burgers’, but they remained a hobby for years.’ After university and a stint traveling around India he landed in the capital where he discovered a thriving street food scene. As impressive as the stalls were, one thing was missing, Bhangra Burgers. So Alex left his job in architecture and took to the bhangra wagon full time serving up juicy balti beef, lamb jalfrezi, panner saag and masala fish burgers accompanied by lassi, chai and pakoras – no milkshakes and fries here. His brightly customised horse truck can be found most weekends at London’s Southbank and will be touring music festivals this summer. You can also hire his catering service for weddings, events and parties. www.bhangraburger.com
