Advice From The Industry’s Leading Gurus: Dr Sarah Shah - Dermal Fillers

Posted: 18.02.15

Dr Sarah Shah is a specialist in aesthetic medicine. As well as providing patient care as a GP in the NHS she runs a facial aesthetics clinic based in Harley Street and the City of London. For the past eight years she has been delivering the latest non-surgical cosmetic procedures to both male and female clients. Here she explains more about how dermal fillers can improve your appearance and reduce signs of ageing.

One of the biggest concerns that brides and grooms have is ensuring they look and feel their best on the Big Day.

Diets, health kicks and exercise can do wonders but sometimes your skin needs extra TLC. Environmental factors, genetics, lifestyle and weight loss all contribute to the speed and extent to which your face loses its vitality - resulting in lines and wrinkles.

For some these lines start to show as early as during their 20s and 30s. Although this is a natural process there are simple ways in which you can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles by slowing them down and the non-surgical treatment of derma fillers is one of them. Fillers can be used to restore volume and fullness to the skin where folds and wrinkles are forming. This could include enhancing sunken cheeks, contouring and filling in troublesome lines such as crow’s feet. Results are natural and you’ll notice them immediately. At my bespoke aesthetic clinic each patient has a treatment that is tailored to them and at consultation stage I explain the extent of the treatment which may involve coming in just once, or several times.

How Dermal Fillers Work
One of the reasons fillers are a popular treatment is because they are safe and natural. Fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that is found naturally in almost every cell in the body. It is found in the deep dermal layers as well as the top epidermal layer of the skin and forms the smooth and elastic properties of young skin and is also regarded as the body’s internal moisturiser. They are used to restore volume and fullness to the skin where folds and wrinkles have formed due to ageing. Dermal fillers come in various preparations which can be tailored to rejuvenate multiple areas to restore deep volume or provide subtle enhancements.

The procedure usually lasts between 30-45 minutes. The filler is injected from a fine needle syringe to the treatment area and the results are visible instantly. It is a simple and painless procedure as the fillers are constituted with local anaesthetic. Another benefit is that there is minimal recovery time. Results can last four to six months. If you suffer from unwanted lines, wrinkles or feel your face is looking sunken and needs a boost, derma fillers could be your solution, however always ensure you only go to a licensed clinic where a qualified doctor administers the treatment.

Case Study: Cheek & Neck Augmentation
Nina Patel (33), an accountant from Kent had derma fillers eight weeks before her wedding

After going through the options and having a full face analysis, Sarah recommended that fillers were more suited to me. My main problem was whenever I saw photos of me I felt my lines always stood out; it was something make-up couldn’t hide. Sarah pointed out that my cheeks could do with a slight lift too to make me look fresher so I booked both. A few days before the treatment I was advised to take arnica tablets to reduce any bruising which can occur on some people. On the day Sarah applied a thick layer of arnica cream to my treatment areas and then marked out where the fillers would be applied while I lay down. The procedure was so quick I barely noticed. Afterwards I applied my usual make-up and went back to work as though nothing had happened. I felt more confident and more beautiful straight away and I couldn’t wait to strike a pose in front of the cameras!

Trending Treatment: The 10 Minute Nose Job
Imagine being able to make your slight imperfections picture perfect for your Big Day. Make bandages, panda eyes and plaster of Paris a thing of the past with the new no down time, Ten Minute Nose Job. In the past this would have seemed impossible, but with a new pioneering treatment, filler is making thousands of dreams come true… Yes, you read it right. NO knife and NO surgery!

So how does non-invasive nose-reshaping actually work? A few injections of cosmetic filler which is based on the natural substance in our skin around the nose is very easy and totally painless with local anaesthetic. Filler can be injected into the bridge of the nose to create a straighter narrower appearance; just above the philtrum (the little dip between your nose and upper lip) which, believe it or not, lifts the nose! You can also add a little into the tip of the nose to create a more refined look. The possibilities are endless and what’s more…results are instant. This is one of the many treatments offered by Dr Sarah Shah at her Bespoke Aesthetics Clinic. (Blogger: Alicia Rennick)
