Go West!

Win! West is West on DVD

Waiting over a decade for a sequel is pretty much unheard of but Ayub Din Khan stepped up to the challenge transporting us back to 1970s Salford to spy on the Khan family, five years from where he left off in East is East to bring us West is West. Nothing much has changed…apart from the fact the older kids have all disappeared while the youngest, Sajid, has swapped his signature olive green parker coat for a school blazer. Sadly these are not happy times for the character…but they are for the viewer. Don’t be surprised if you shed a tear when you lay eyes on the cobbled northern streets and decaying chippie for the first time; it’s like returning home after years to see an old friend and you can’t find more comfort in a movie than that.

But don’t get too settled. Disgusted by his behaviour and ignorance (Sajid bunks school and hurls racist abuse at his pa), George (Om Puri) decides to take his son to Pakistan to instill him with some proper morals and manners. And so we find ourselves in their dusty ancestral village where we’re introduced to the rest of the extended Khan family and quirky characters who live in the vicinity. One of them takes Sajid under his wing while George wakes up to the fact modern Pakistan is nothing like what he remembers. From dodgy kebabs to sufi dancing, swimming with water buffalos to finding love, it’s a satisfyingly sweet tale with a much darker sense of reality than it’s prequal…but that only adds to its appeal.

The film is released on DVD next week and we have two copies to give away.
