First Crush: Ramzi

The suave balladeer returns to reclaim his stake on our hearts

What’s new in your world?

As well as Fall In Love reaching number two in the iTunes chart, my second album is huge in the Middle East and my first album did really well in Japan. It meant I got to do a lot of travelling, which translates well in my new music.

Been making friends in high places?

I’ve been chilling with Taio Cruz, and Kelly Clarkson’s management asked me to pen a song for her, so yeah, I’ve got some cool numbers on my phone!

Looking dapper as ever!

When the track Love is Blind came out, I didn’t care so much about my image but then people started to recognise me and I realised I had to play the role of an artist – I could only get away for so long telling people I wasn’t who they thought I was when I stepped out looking scruffy!

Has the attention turned you vain?

I try my best to remain humble, but I have developed a tiny hint of arrogance to go with my image – you need to come across as sure of yourself and your ability. But I do know I need to switch off being Ramzi when I’m around loved ones.

Found your ideal woman yet?

I don’t think she exists! But since we’re talking ideals, she has to be attractive, have a great sense of humour, be a very good cook and she has to be a singer. Someone who understands the time I invest in my music. Oh, and she needs to smell good, have nice legs, a pretty smile and nice teeth. I don’t ask for much, do I? Better start looking!

Your track My Wife suggests you’re ready to settle down?

I have thought about it, but it’s more that I like writing songs people can relate to. Marriage is a huge thing amongst my fanbase and there aren’t many songs out there about wives, are there?

Your fans seem to love you plenty…

Praise and criticism go hand in hand, and I try not to let either get to me, but I do like it when a typical rudeboy type gets in touch to say my lyrics described what he’s going through. I’ve received a few interesting proposals and have the odd stalker, but keep ‘em coming, I say!

Are you the romantic type?

I think to be someone who writes and sings from the heart, you have to be an emotional man. I’ve had my fair share of heartbreaks in the past, but I’m not overly sensitive either. No one wants to hear a sap!

Your new single is called Pretending. Ever pretended to be in love?

Never – I take that quite seriously. Most songs have a story and this one is about seeing a friend go through a relationship pretending everything was okay when, clearly, it wasn’t. I can’t see the point. What makes you a catch? I’m not good at sports, but I’m blessed on the musical side and can also cook quite well. And women like a man who’d rather spend time in the kitchen than watching sports, right?

Why all the love songs?

Love is such a universal topic and I make mine different because my lyrics are always pro-women. Plus everyone wants to fall in love. Don’t you? I’m pro-woman, and I’m on the women’s side in my songs.
