Girl Power gets a hot new face in Tanya Mariam

There’s always room for a new girl band. And while many of them just end up looking and sounding like a third rate Girls Aloud copy, Fe-Nix are a breath of fresh air. Formed by Tanya and her pals Jade and Ayshen, with rapper Red added to the mix, they are anything but packaged. Says Tanya: ‘We write, sing, dance, style, organise, perform, design everything by ourselves. When we started out, they tried to turn us into pop princesses and put us in little frilly dresses, but it just wasn’t working for us.’
What really makes them stand out is that, while far too many girl bands swoon about loving boys and heartache, they really put the high-heeled boot into men! Says Tanya: ‘A lot of our music is man-bashing, man-hating. I think that probably comes from me, because of my brothers. They tormented me when I was younger, picked on me, bullied me, called me names! I’m getting my own back now. We want to put a positive message out there for women – you can do everything by yourself. Don't depend on any man.’
Nor is theirs the life of glamour and A-list parties you might imagine. Despite performing with the likes of Pussycat Dolls, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and Tinie Tempah, Tanya points out: ‘We might plaster our face with a lot of make-up, do our hair really nicely but it's a lot of hard work. Sometimes you’ve got dark circles under your eyes, or not eating properly because you’re on tour – we’ve been on tour with N-Dubz where we’ve been living off McDonalds for a whole month. Literally at the end I felt like I was going to collapse because I had no energy and I’m so used to home-cooked food.’
You’ll never hear the girls of Fe-Nix complain though. Unlike their peers, they don’t bitch about one another (that’s what happens when you’re friends that start a group rather than lumped in together), and with a new album based on fairytale imagery, this could well be one girl band that goes on to live happily ever after.
