What’s special about your character Twinkle?
Twinkle is close to my heart. I know famous people who are now are struggling, so I wanted to be in this story of a struggling artist. My character lands in London from Punjab; Twinkle becomes a star and marries. He then starts making mistakes and hits rock bottom. Unfortunately, this happens everyday, though it’s never happened to me personally, thank God.

How do you feel being involved in the first-ever bhangra musical?
It’s great seeing the audience interacting and a mix of people dancing along. White people and those from other cultures love the story too. Our mission is now to take Bhangra to non-Punjabis worldwide, and theatre is the natural step.

Any reservations before stepping into Twinkle’s toes?
I’d gained self-assurance from DCS, but here, I’m out of my comfort zone. Sometimes, you get ten seconds for a costume change. If you miss your cues, you’ve had it because it’s so fast-moving.

Worst incident you’ve had with the play?
I started laughing when I had to sing to my wife. This made the actress laugh, and we ended up walking off stage crying with laughter.

Are you a natural-born dancer?
I have natural rhythm and in DCS I strutted my own stuff, but in the play, it’s more difficult because you have to learn new steps.

Wildest audience you’ve had?
We played in middle-class Oxford, and I didn’t think it was working. At the encore, I was shocked to see the audience on their feet applauding. I’m proud that our message was far-reaching.
